This report assesses the impacts of social media websites on university students' lives, both the pros and cons of using these Internet tools with regard to the students' academic performances and their interaction with peers as well as their time expended.
The social network proposal
Broadly speaking, the use of the Internet has become something unavoidable lately. It is practically impossible to live in the contemporary era without having an account on any electronic social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and so on; in relation to students, it is not different. Indeed, the former was created to be a platform for interaction amongst students of different colleges (e.g. Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, etc.), which makes it compelling for this specific social group. However, students have used these apps for showing up their private lives (travels, family environment, friendship, and dating - naturally).
Pros and cons
It is undeniable that the way someone does research nowadays has been changed for the better. The range of information somebody finds online is something that might never have been foreseen half a century ago. Today, anyone is able to browse online through international scientific magazines and download papers of the newest findings in any field of knowledge. However, there is an underuse of this potential.
Notwithstanding, the Internet has almost infinite possibilities, as a source of information, most of the time spent online by university students is for social media interaction. It leads to a misuse of their time, which could end up in a reckless academic life. Although those websites might enhance their social network, the lack of eye contact may develop undesired behavior such as shyness, fear, recklessness, or even inhuman ones, like social-phobia or ruthlessness for instance.
Recommendations
To avoid creating a gloomy generation, whose social interactions would be summarized in flicking left from the ones whose profiles or comments are not to their taste, activities with students aiming at more understanding of cultural diversity should be fostered, in which people would be able to check how revealing and amusing their lives would be with no e-selection.
